"Its wonderful to climb the liquid mountains of the sky.  Behind me and before me is God and I have no fears." - Helen Keller

This painting is all about the sky, then the aspens leading down to the path.  Usually, it's the other way around in my paintings.  The path takes the viewer where I want their eye to lead.  I love this quote from Helen Keller.  Think about it, she couldn't see the sky.  However, she could smell the fresh air while feeling the wind on her skin (not listening to it).

My 30"x30" acrylic aspen tree palette knife painting on wide border canvas is titled, "Finding Grace".  This painting is available for purchase.  You can see more of my work and contact me through my website.  CLICK HERE

Herman Melville, an early American author, is quoted as saying, "We cannot live only for ourselves.  A thousand fibers connect us with our fellow men; and among those fibers, as sympathetic threads, our actions run as causes, and they come back to us as effects."

My 11"x14" acrylic aspen tree painting on canvas is titled, "Tangled".  It was inspired by my trip last year to Kebler Pass, just outside of Crested Butte, Colorado.  There was an area up in the pass that contained a stand of brilliantly beautiful young aspen trees.  They were so deeply connected that it appeared they were tangled up in one another.

Artist Statement
My artwork is a natural outpouring of my encounter with God and His majestic creation, resulting in paintings that are dramatic, uplifting, and full of life!  I look for beauty and truth in that which is both obvious and sometimes hidden.  I’m captivated by the splendor of light on the surface of objects, and the contrasting shadows that those objects project. I’m equally beguiled by the myriad of colors that frolic about my world, and invite me to join in on the dance.  My artwork is a waltz that I engage in with brush, paint, and spirit.  It brings me great joy to share the result of that dance with those who collect my work!
My tagline is “joy on canvas”.  It was given to me by Stan Lee, the creator of Spiderman, the Incredible Hulk and numerous other super heroes. When asked to describe my work in just three to five words, Stan’s response was, “Joy on canvas”, because according to him, my work exudes sheer joy”.
 INFLUENCE
"I'm known for my tree paintings, especially aspen and birch trees.  The earliest experience I can remember that affected my love for painting trees, was watching my mother (a student of famed watercolorist, Eliot O' Hara) paint when I was a young girl.  With every whimsical brushstroke, she seemed to have a way of bringing her trees to life!  My love for painting aspen and birch trees began over thirty years ago. I've traveled to Colorado on numerous occasions to photograph these majestic trees.  The beauty of the white aspen and birch trees, and their quaking iridescent leaves, capture my artistic eye and fill my senses with wonder.
I'm deeply inspired by the works of Vincent Van Gogh and Paul Cezanne.  Their rich brushstrokes and use of color and light, inspire my work and make me want to be the best artist that I can possibly be!  American Artists,Andrew WyethEdgar Whitney, and Georgia O'keeffe, have also inspired my work.
PROCESS
“The process I use to paint in acrylic and oil is greatly influenced by my early years in watercolor painting.  I gradually build up layers of paint in order to capture an illuminating glow.  I began developing my style of painting aspen and birch trees thirty years ago. By creating rich texture with my palette knife (when painting in oil or acrylic) I'm able to convey the bark and leaves of the trees which practically brings them to life.  Before I start any painting, I do a quick gesture drawing to loosen up and then I sketch out my drawing.  This helps me to be sure I have a good composition and strong area of interest.  I lay out my color palette before I begin to paint. This way, I can be sure it is well orchestrated like a fine tuned symphony”.   Jill Saur's Art

“In wisdom gathered over time I have found that every experience is a form of exploration.” – Ansel Adams

Leita Thompson Memorial Park is a one hundred acre park near our home just outside of Atlanta. In an open field near the entrance, you’ll find this stately old tree resting on a hill.  No doubt, this tree will soon find it's way onto my canvas.  www.jillsaur.com

The tree painting was inspired by a tree down at the beautiful Chattahoochee River in Roswell, GA.  I love to create texture in my art.  Working intuitively, using a variety of palette knives, I layer the paint and watch the scene come to life.  This 11"x14" acrylic palette knife painting is titled, "Delightful Encounter".

As a photographer, I photograph what I see. As an artist, I paint what I remember. This juxtaposition is a beautiful dance. When I walk amidst the aspens I’m moved to capture their beauty. But, capturing them it is not enough. I must reach for the paint, brushes and canvas that will once again set them free. - Jill Saur  My website:  CLICK HERE

This 11"x14" acrylic palette knife painting is titled, "Eye Of The Beholder".   I rendered this aspen tree painting in exciting hues that dance within the texture.  My reference was an image I captured while on vacation in Crested Butte, Colorado.   We spent the entire week up on Kebler Pass where I was in heaven amongst these beautiful trees!

Aspen Tree Art

Trees in art, my favorite subject to paint!  What's the allure?  Since the beginning of time, in fact since Genesis, trees have been and continue to be used to teach us great lessons in life.  In art, I've been inspired by Claude Monet and Vincent Van Gogh's renderings of trees.
However, the single painting that influenced my love for telling stories by rendering trees was one painting that I saw when I was a teenager.  In fact, I watched every stroke being applied as the soulful rendering of this one tree came to life.  The artist was my mother.  It was sort of a fantasy painting with a light that emanated deep inside the forest, where a little cabin rested comfortably in the woods.  Fraught with emotion, her painting expressed  feelings that she could never express in words.  I was amazed and captivated by this beautiful medium in which to express oneself!  Paint is my vehicle of expression and trees are most often my storytellers.
These two 36"x48" acrylic paintings on canvas are for sale.  These works are uplifting and full of life.  The story?  Well, it's in the painting!    My Website

This is "my tree" at the Chattahoochee River. It's the subject of a number of my paintings. Its life is fraught with meaning to my artistic soul and its sheer will to survive inspires me.  Completely hollow inside the base of this tree, one or two roots running up the side, manage to sustain the life of this warrior.

My 30"x40" acrylic painting, "The Hastening Tree", remains in my personal collection.  Reproductions are available. www.JillSaur.com

I rendered these two 36"x48" aspen tree paintings as if they were aglow by the light of the moon in the dark of the darkest night.  It's no secret that I love aspens!  These two large paintings, "Circle of Quiet One" and "Circle of Quiet Two", have recently sold to a new collector.

My oversized paintings are usually purchased to be the focal point of a big room.  Also, a larger work of art can actually make a smaller room appear to be much bigger than it is.  To see more of my work, please visit my website. CLICK HERE

My new 8"x10" palette knife oil painting, "Aspen Breeze", has just the right amount of texture to lead your eye into the ambient aspen forest and spark a daydream or two.  Andre Gide once said, "Art is a collaboration between God and the artist, and the less the artist does the better".  It was from that collaboration that is painting was born.

Trees In Art

Today, I reflected back on my 16"x20" acrylic abstract tree painting, "Fire and Water".  While painting this deeply emotional piece, I watched it emerge before my eyes.  I wasn't painting it, it was painting me.  Those special works of art usually turn out to be my best pieces.

I love what Paul Cezanne said, "Painting from nature is not copying the object; it is realizing one's sensations".  The experience of creating art is truly beautiful and mysterious at the same time. - Jill Saur  www.JillSaur.com

J.R. Tolkien said, "Not all those who wander are lost".  I love to wander through forests or hillsides. There are discoveries to be made and thoughts to be formed while beholding the beauty of Gods nature.

This 11"x14" acrylic painting is entitled, "Loves Journey".  I try to include a path in my landscapes.  Hopefully, it invites the viewer to dream about their life's journey and ponder all the possibilities that lay before them.  www.JillSaur.com

Pablo Picasso said, "The purpose of art is washing the dust of daily life off of our souls".  I love that quote!  My tag-line, "joy on canvas", is indicative of what my clients tell me they feel when they view my work.  That always makes me feel great because I pour my heart and soul into all my work.
My goal is for my work to emanate the joy and beauty of life.

This is one of my new small works of art.  This 8"x10" acrylic aspen tree painting is entitled, "Echoed Love".  It was inspired by my latest trip to Crested Butte, Colorado, where I spent an entire week photographing aspens and getting ideas for new paintings.  To purchase this painting, please contact me through my website.  I accept all major credit cards.  CLICK HERE

You won't find these trees growing in Atlanta, Ga., but you will find them in the homes of my patrons here in the south.  Aside from my collectors around the country, I'm thankful to my clients in the south who appreciate the stunning beauty of an aspen trees forest!

This grouping, "Aspen Rhapsody In Snow", is a collection of three individual acrylic paintings on a wide border canvas that hang side by side.  All together, they measure 72" wide by 30" tall.  If there's just a hint of light in the room, these paintings emanate a beautiful glow.  To inquire about this piece, please contact me through my website. CLICK HERE
